Jaroslav Valek
Profile
Jaroslav Valek studied surface and plastic engraving of metals at the Middle Art and Industry School in Kremnica (1974–1978). Afterwards, he majored in stage design from the Theatre Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (1978–1983) under the leadership of Ludmila Purkyňová, Ladislav Vychodil, and Otto Šujan. While still a student, he took a job at the Silesian Theatre of Zděnek Nejedlý in Opava (the present Silesian Theatre Opava) as a stage designer and set director (1983–1984). In 1985, he started working as a stage designer for the Slovak National Uprising Theatre in Martin (the present Slovak Chamber Theatre), where he worked as set director between 1990 and 1996. In the period 1997–2002, he organized and produced stage and costume design for numerous Slovak and Czech theatres. From 2002 till 2015 he was the artistic director or production at the State Opera in Banská Bystrica. Simultaneously, he taught at the Department of Direction and Dramaturgy at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica (2002–2013). Between 2015 and 2019, he was the director of the Art and Decoration workshops of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. As a stage designer, he has worked for theatres in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, and Serbia.
In 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1995, Valek took part in the international stage design exhibition the Prague Quadrennial. In 2011, he was the author of the Slovak exhibition there. He has regularly participated in theatre festivals as well and has collaborated on several projects of the PRO SCENA civic association. In addition to that, he is a professional costume designer for the theatre, wors as a graphic and theatre poster artist.
Jaroslav Valek is a universal type of stage designer who uses all the technical possibilities of the theatre in his work. He has created stage sets for dozens of drama and opera productions and has also designed costumes for some of them. Valek’s signature art includes multi-purpose stage objects, the use of turntables, thrusters, hoists, hydraulics, technology, projections, arena-type floor plans as well as lighting objects, neon lights or stand-in architectural features. As part of the operatic staging concept, he works with the stage space by opening the stage both in depth and width, freeing up the front space for dance numbers and chorus performances. Valek’s stage art always contains visual metaphors expressed using hints and condensation. He reduces all stage elements and uses a seemingly static stage to uncover variability and dynamic changes. Another spectacular and multi-layered element of Jaroslav Valek's stage design are mirrors full of references and meanings that simultaneously reflect what is happening on the stage.
Jaroslav Valek was one of the first stage designers in Slovakia who perceived light as an element that could be worked with to construct and create space. He used colours and lighting as dramatizing elements of stage design that helped him create dynamics in time and produce a comprehensible illusion of the stage space. Valek has been using light to substitute for material elements and decorations on stage. In Witkievicz’s The Mother (Slovak National Uprising Theatre Martin, 1988), Valek used neon lights, which delineated the upper and lower sections of the stage. In the end, the upper square was lowered to the stage, thus metaphorically framing the devastated microcosm and creating the production’s dream-like atmosphere. The black and white and grey stage design, such as the set used in Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (Slovak National Theatre Bratislava, 2009, directed by Roman Polák), evoked the colour scheme of a monochrome movie. The stage space consisted of monumental walls and moving panels, which transformed the performance space with quick and elaborate transformations. One of the most significant and colourfully similar sets was the abstract scenery for the production Piargy (Andrej Bagar Theatre Nitra 2008). With three shrinking portals, an extendable platform and projections, Valek created diverse environments. In such a pure visual form with minimal elements, the stage designers presented an unconventional perspective on Slovak lyrical prose.
Jaroslav Valek collaborates with a number of directors – Matúš Oľha, Roman Polák, Štefan Korenči, Tomáš Rosický, and Michal Babiak in drama productions, and with Dana Dinková, and mostly Marián Chudovský in opera.
