Peter Čanecký
Profile
Peter Čanecký is a graduate of the Department of Stage Design at the Theatre Faculty, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. After graduation, he worked in the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Theatre in Zvolen (1983–1988) and in the New Stage Theatre (1988–1990). Since 1991, he has worked as a pedagogue at the Department of Stage Design, Academy of Performing Arts, and has been the head of the department since 2006. He has received the academic titles of associate professor and full professor. In his academic career, he went on study stays at prestigious universities in the Netherlands, England, and Finland. He collaborates with Slovak and Czech theatres and theatre artists. The creative network of the directors he works with includes Roman Polák, Stanislav Štepka, Juraj Nvota, Marián Chudovský, Jozef Bednárik, and Martin Huba. It was mostly the cooperation with Roman Polák that provided Čanecký with new opportunities related to original directorial interpretations. As a stage and costume designer, he made sets for Slovak and Czech movies directed by Juraj Jakubisko, Juraj Nvota, and Alice Nellis, among others. He is a multiple laureate of the DOSKY award in the Best Costume of the Season category and winner of the film awards The Czech Lion and The Sun in a Net.
Peter Čanecký is one of the most outstanding Slovak theatre costume designers. His artistic poetics is characterized by a tendency towards minimalist rendering, which is manifested especially in the moderate palette and style of achromatic colouring. Through these attributes, the costume designer lets the actor’s action stand out. The emphasis is placed on the fine detail, which takes on the function of a sign that becomes essential to the interpretive context. A prime example of such a depiction is the production of The Cherry Orchard (Slovak Chamber Theatre Martin, 2017), in which the artist made use of a dominant grey colour, broadly embodied in the achromatic tuning of the Rococo stylized costumes.
When using historical and folklore costumes, Čanecký eliminates ornamental elements and preserves the original, authentic cuts. In the production of Piargy (Andrej Bagar Theatre Nitra, 2008), inspired by the work of the Slovak naturalist prose writers, he used the fundamental visual concept of folk costumes from the Zliechov region. He then stripped the costumes of their significant features of folklore decorativeness. Alongside this elimination, however, he retained the material authenticity of the linen and the original cut, which shows Čanecký’s feel not only for cutting, but also for colour, material, and his commitment to finding the ideal proportion between text, subject matter, and actors. The principle based on the elimination of decorative elements is also present in his costume designs for opera productions.
Stylization is a frequent characteristic of Čanecký’s poetics. In Ivanov (Slovak Chamber Theatre Martin, 2006), he achieved such stylization by altering the shape of the clothing. Anomalies in the form of an overexposed abdomen, a greatly enlarged bust or a hunched back, created by stuffing individual parts of the costume, stemmed from the characters’ traits. They bore signs of a certain typification, even caricature, through which the artist captured the blending of characters on a realistic and grotesque level. Another form of stylization was applied in the costumes for the production of The Misanthrope (Slovak Chamber Theatre Martin, 2010). The high society moving around the main character Alceste was dressed in costumes made of materials that featured prints of famous works of art. The extravagant patterns and cuts of the garments rendered their wearers as a bizarre ensemble of high-status profligates, devaluing the beauty of fine art into clothing.
Čanecký’s poetics is showcased by a variety of inventive approaches and starting points. For him, costume is a tool that helps him to think and feel in relation to the dramatic text, which repeatedly brings him into confrontation with the issue of identity change or disguise. He prepares artistic designs for all variants of the envisaged stage situations and cast. This approach encourages him to consider specific actors and actresses when designing costumes.
